Kayaking

The best way to build your paddling prowess is in a squad environment. By paddling with others, you can benchmark your performance, stay motivated, and meet like-minded athletes who will support you to meet your goals.

What is it?

Led by some of Australia’s top AR, multisport and paddling athletes, Peak Adventure’s ocean kayaking squad sessions comprise structured training sets designed to improve your technique, strength and fitness. Whether your goal is to simply get fit, lose weight, and discover a healthy hobby in the great outdoors, or compete in kayaking, adventure racing or multisport events, our squad sessions cater for a wide variety of athletes.

Who is it for?

Anyone and everyone! Paddling is a great low-impact sport suitable for all ages and abilities. We cater for weekend warriors to elite athletes.

Pre-requisites

Ocean paddling can be a risky sport if proper precautions are not taken, so we place a big emphasis on safety. To join our squad, you must:

  • be able to swim 200 metres unassisted, wearing a PFD

  • have completed at least one kayaking for beginners course, a private lesson, or have equivalent experience.

Equipment hire

If you don’t have your own gear, never fear! A limited amount of equipment, including kayaks, paddles and PFDs, are available free-of-charge. Please be aware that this equipment is allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so make sure you get down early to grab the boat you want.

Mandatory gear
  • A Type 1, 2 or 3 PFD must be worn at all times during our squad sessions – it is law. No PFD, no paddle. We recommend the Mocke Racer PFD.

  • At least one beacon light (preferably flashing) must be worn on your person, or attached to your craft, when paddling before dawn/after dusk. Again, this is law. No light, no love!

  • Please note that we do not provide lights if you’re hiring our gear – you must bring your own.

  • We strongly recommend wearing a boat leash in high winds, or if you’re not confident. We recommend the Mocke Lifeline Calf Leash.

What do I wear?

You will be getting wet, so make sure you are dressed in clothing that is appropriate for the conditions e.g. Lycra, neoprene or polypropylene tops and bottoms; a windproof top (very important in winter); wetsuit if it’s super cold and you expect to fall in; booties or old runners (for warmth and foot-protection on the beach); beanie, cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen, depending on the weather. Please, NO COTTON, JEANS, HOODIES or JUMPERS.
