Ultra Running Clinic, 21 May 2016, Yarra Ranges

Have you been struck by the trail running bug in recent years? Are you ready to take it to the next level? Peak Adventure is running ultra-marathon training this Winter for those wanting to take their running to a new level.

Ultra-marathons are a little different to what you may have experienced in shorter trail runs. They are not about times, splits or heart rate zones. An ultra-marathon is a journey for the mind, the body and the soul. If you’ve ever considered races such as the Two Bays Trail Run, Surfcoast Century, Buffalo Stampede, Rollercoaster Run, Ultra Trail Australia or the Alpine Challenge, these sessions are a great introduction to help you achieve those goals.

Come and join us to get some training under you belt, and learn some of the ins and outs of this wonderful sport.

When & Where?

Saturday, 21st May, 7am-5pm

We’ll meet at Sandridge Surf Life Saving Club Port Melbourne (see map) at 7am and will board the ‘Run Bus’ to our destination - Marysville in the Yarra Ranges. The bus will meet us at Maroondah Dam at the end for the drive back to Sandridge.

What?

Runners will start in Marysville and finish at Maroondah Dam, just outside of Healesville. There will be a mid-way stop at Dom Dom Saddle. The run is approximately 35km, and will take the group between 5 and 7 hours.

Throughout the day, advice be given on gear, clothing, nutrition, pacing strategy, recovery, as well as other tips and tricks.

The group will tackle a range of terrain (yes there will be hills!) and may separate into smaller groups at different stages of the run, to cater for everyone’s running capacity.

After the run, runners will have access to a range of equipment to help with post-training recovery. We will focus on stretching techniques, active recovery and passive recovery. Then you’ll be treated to some delicious baked goods from Healesville’s famous Beechworth Bakery, and will re-board the Run Bus which will return you to Sandridge.

Am I Suitable?

We want to make these runs achievable for as many people as possible. However, they are step up from your average trail run, so we’d like you to come into them with a baseline level of competency. It is desirable that you:

  •  Have run at least 10km on trails before

  •  Have run hills before

  •  Are free of any musculoskeletal injuries or niggles which may be  aggravated by longer runs.

Who?

Your coach will be Peak Adventure coach and athlete Robbie Savage. Rob has competed in a range of ultramarathons from 50km to 160 km, in Victoria and beyond. Rob doesn’t like long walks on the beach………..he likes long runs in the mountains!

What to Bring?
  • Running pack with bladder capable of holding at least 1.5 L of liquid

  • Trail running shoes

  • Various running layers! Be prepared to run in cold and at times muddy conditions. As a minimum you’ll need a thermal top and thermal pants, and it is highly recommended you bring gloves, a beanie / head sock and a wind and water proof jacket

  • Basic first aid kit

  • Space blanket

  • Whistle

  • Mobile phone

  • Towel (for after the run if necessary)

  • Running / walking poles (these are optional but highly recommended for the steeper runs).

Many of these items may not be necessary during the run, but they are on the mandatory gear list for most ultramarathon races, so you need to get used to running with them.

Peak Adventure will supply food, water and electrolytes for before, during and after the run; however, you are welcome to bring any of your nutrition if you have certain preferences.

How Much?
  • Peak Adventure member: $120 per person.

  • Non-member: $140

  • The price is inclusive of transport and food & drink during and after the run.
